What is a BBL?
Before I answer that question, I need to take a step back and start even broader than that. There are all types of reasons that people decide to get cosmetic surgery. Whether you’ve birthed children, and your body has been through one hell of a rollercoaster ride…whether you’ve improved your lifestyle and lost a ton of weight and now have excess skin that you’d like removed…whether you don’t fit into either of these buckets and simply want to feel better about the shape of your natural born body…that is your prerogative. I’m here to support it and educate you where I can!
If you happened to stumble upon this page and you’re neither interested in, nor an advocate for, cosmetic surgery, then I wish you well as you move along from this site. People’s reasons for getting one or more procedures are their business, and I can tell you they’re definitely not doing it to please other people…especially you. 🙂
That said… BBL stands for Brazilian Butt Lift, which is actually a bit misleading. It doesn’t involve a lift at all. A lift is typically a procedure that involves scalpel incisions and removal of excess skin (like an arm lift, where sagging would be improved, or a face lift, where the neck would be tightened, or a tummy tuck, where the abdomen is repaired and skin removed and tightened). However, a BBL involves neither the removal of skin nor scalpel incisions. It’s more of a body shaping or body contouring procedure. It’s a fat transfer.
First, liposuction is done on various parts of the body discussed ahead of time with your surgeon in order to harvest the fat cells used in the transfer. Then, based on the goals of the individual patient, the harvested fat is transferred to areas like the hips and over the glutes. A procedure that people may be more familiar with involving implants, such as silicone, is outdated, unsafe, and illegal in most countries nowadays. You most likely won’t catch a Board Certified surgeon placing implants in someone’s rear at all anymore, given the great increase in safety during a BBL. Fat transfers result in a much more natural final result, and are overall safer too. I even once read that a prominent doctor in the BBL-world wants to rename it to “Safe Subcutaneous Buttock Augmentation”. This great article that I came across a few weeks ago explains just how much safer buttock augmentation surgeries are now than they used to be. People are judging off of old statistics and are afraid to have the surgery. In my opinion there is a risk to any surgery at all, and as long as we do our research, book the procedure with a Board Certified surgeon, and have a detailed conversation with them about goals and expectations that are realistic, then there is nothing out of the ordinary to fear.
